lastfm based music summary [2021]
cannot be bothered to format this nicely (smiling with 5 hearts emoji) maybe in 2022 i'll learn how to make dw tables.
this is lower than 2020 (47k) and higher than 2019 (28k). 2019: full time work, 2020: pandemic schooling, 2021: half and half
svt has a strong hold on top spot but lost a huge chunk that came from flfl last yr (600+ scrobbles) cause i didn't like their jp work this year. i don't really take anyone except svt and taylor seriously as 'favorite artists' whose discographies i listen to widely b/c omgeol's bsides are getting worse every year, and iu i don't know like half her songs but it's just that she has SO MANY good ones. i guess this applies to taylor too though. day6 used to be like that to me too but this year uhh we all saw what happened there. the other artists just get up there with a few songs i listen to on repeat
obviously this is front half skewed, but even then the first half of the year was probably better for music to me. if a song really wanted to it would get into the top 15 even with limited time, like rock with you did, just because listening to catchy music, by nature, is frontloaded. but last yr mago by gfriend came out in like november and it made it to #4 (431 scrobbles) and then it made it to #23 again this yr w/ an extra 200 scrobbles, which is to say rock with you, given an extra 6 months or so would really earn its place as one of 2021's best songs. the fair way to compare these songs would be to take the scrobbles in the first 365 days after first listen. but that's too much work and requires too long of a wait!! they fade out like an exponential decay anyway so you can just look at the all time plays at that point.
looking at the spreadsheet of songs and thinking about translating that to dw like i was planning to but at 3AM sounds like a terrible idea. basically i did multiply my scrobbles by song duration, because a scrobble ranking is advantageous to short songs when you are looping them only (like me when i listen to gyuri's best part cover from my local files...), and disadvantageous to longer songs because you are listening to them for longer, or the same amount of time but it's not really getting captured equally. but a duration based ranking is disadvantageous to short songs when they are being looped in a playlist (like how i use my on repeat playlist as much as i do), since it's overrepresenting long songs even tho u are experiencing them the same amount of times. anyway since i can't weight them really i just made both rankings and am looking at them with my eyes. this is part of why i wish spotify gave u a better breakdown of how much you listen to songs in playlists.
the top 15 is literally the same songs except crow knocked out best part cover but i just think it's interesting how different the order looks. like i'd really say duration is more accurate except duration also overweights the 2 day when i was young session, since i really only listen to that in my sleep playlist now. actually ngl i literally don't remember listening to crow for 13 whole hours.
anyway, other songs i loved this year that aren't captured in the top 15:
this is in duration order which is just so telling to me. like weekend is 3:53 to rtl's 3:07 so i basically listened to them the same amount of time but it shows up so differently in scrobbles!! same thing w/ coin and epilogue... and like i honestly think spider is one of the best kpop songs from this yr so i truly dunno why i didn't listen to it more E___E i rmb it came out at the same time as deja vu though which is always going to depress scrobbles
i think the lesson to learn here from the fact that the two lists basically have the same songs on them is that specific rankings and numbers do not matter and i should just categorize music into "favorites" and "not bad" but also, like, dun dun dance is clearly soty and everyone needs to know that.
