i really wholeheartedly love f1 now, obviously not every aspect of it, but i think it will be a long term interest as a sport and i know this because it is Emotional Support Videos In The Background When I Go To Sleep

>> HOW I GOT INTO

my first exposure to "formula 1" was just other kpop fans particularly f1 au fic. then last summer (2021) someone at work recommended drive to survive over lunch, and this recommendation was particularly helpful because they prefaced it by saying they have no interest in racing but the show itself is very engaging. as someone with no interest in racing prior to this, and no interest in sports in general except for women's gymnastics once every 4 years, i truly never suspected i would get to this point! this rec is what set the netflix show in my watch list and then when i had the free time to try it i got hooked instantly. of course, now that i actually care about the sport itself i know that dts is very watered down and fake and boring in comparison to the technical/strategy/politics of the real world. i wanted to rewatch but i really cannot stomach it LOL. but i agree that it's very good for newcomers because it presents a basic overview of the sport, its rules and of course the personal relations aspect where the other half of the "drama" comes from. it's genuinely entertaining (at least the first season, eventually you will get diminishing returns just because it falls into a pattern)

>> WHY DO I LIKE IT SO MUCH!

i think it is because f1 racing is very easy to follow and very statistics based. there is plenty that i don't understand about it - i'm not mechanically inclined, nor do i understand aerodynamics, but i think you can choose the level of technical understanding you need to enjoy the sport at whatever level you want. and there are so many people doing analyses on every little thing that you can learn if you want to. at the core it is cars go fast car who gets to the finish line first wins. but it is because i care about the people that i like it! dts does a great job of introducing the watcher to the narratives of rivalries and good relationships and history and from there you can proceed to get deeper into whatever dynamics you like because the teams market and so does f1 as a whole and so does racing journalism.

in addition the youtube content makes following the championship very easy even if you don't want to watch full races - i graduated from checking the championship standing on wikipedia of each past year after the respective season of dts i finished, to checking the current championship/podiums at the time i finished s3 (which was about october 2021), to looking forward to dts4 coming out without having engaged with anything f1 for 5 months, to following pre-season news on r/f1, to seeing race results on reddit, to watching race highlights, to watching live races......  it's very /accessible/. and now i have f1tv so...

>> FAVORITES

superficial charles leclerc fan but also he is quite funny. ferrari you are killing me rn.... i like sebastian vettel primarily because he is a bit of a nerd, which i first realized in that insane grill the grid video where he names every single f1 champion ever... i have soft spots for most people on the grid depending on the day but i need mick to score some points.... point singular.... but because there are only 20-ish drivers at once i think it is much easier to be invested and learn about the history of the sport even and the current ones are mostly all very funny or interesting and there is a pretty nice visual average. also i was a guenther steiner supporter and by extension haas fan but this has died off slightly because i am waiting for something good to happen to mick.

+ ALSO i am rooting so hard for oscar piastri to join f1 next year... he just seems nice ok!!

>> MEDIA

aside from the obvious fp/qualy/race sessions - i will watch quali and the race whenever i am free, i might catch part of fp especially if i know i won't make the others but fp gets my hopes up too much so i don't like it. i'd just been watching the race highlights if i missed a race but now that i have f1tv i'm not sure if i'll watch the whole race or just the extended highlights... there is no way i'm going spoiler free until i can watch the whole race though, if i'm out of the house i will be reading the lap by lap so i don't necessarily think it will be fun to watch the WHOLE RACE after the fact.

i love grill the grid very much.... ferrari c2 is alright i dont think the content is very interesting but i eat it up anyway. alphatauri hit gold with yuki and pierre though. actually i think the f1 youtube makes very good compilations of past years moments as well and i watch many of them

i like the podcast shift + f1 because their preseason primer was very helpful for me to understand some of the terms used during race commentary and they have a weekly release schedule (post-race and/or pre-race) which is very easy to keep up on but still interesting enough to not feel redundant, for now. i have honestly heard 80-90% of the discussion topics already because i read a lot of f1 news during the week... but i still like to hear level headed people comment on what is going on for an hour. i actually find myself knowing the answer sometimes when they are like 'did this happen? i don't have my notes' particularly if i actually watched the race. beyond the grid (driver interviews) are okay when i like the driver... i'm not a huge fan of the host's talking style and generally prefer an interview to be full of banter or to have the host be silent. i think it's more annoying when the host is like, we all admire you and you've been through so much and blah blah...

i also like chain bear for explanations on f1 concepts and i love f1 season reviews as a way to 1) catch up on history and 2) fall asleep to motor racing sounds :)

>> END

there is enough controversy in the sport and discussion by its very large international fanbase that there is rarely a dull day, and i appreciate having something to look forward to every week or every two weeks! i am glad the fun is spread out over a few days too. i thought after i "became old" i would stop breaking my sleep schedule to conform to events in other timezones (like i did to watch kpop online concerts >_<) but i now set alarms for races... the difference is with afternoon/evening europe starting times i get a lot of races at 9am sunday my time and i am an adult so i can actually wake up to those normally :")
