QUESTIONS
looking back, did you expect to write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?

guys let's just admit it. this is embarrassing. honestly i've been saying for years that i was running out of ideas and the one year i didn't proclaim it i really did stumble. i did think i was going to write less because i wasn't going to obligation signup for ficfests but i really figured i would make up for it somehow like with dwfic.

i think the reason my word count specifically dropped so much is because it psychologically pains me to say what's happening in writing anymore. i really just want people to read the text and understand everything i'm thinking and every little nuance and everything seems so cliche if i write it out... i guess it's like, yes, i'm lazy but also if i was really just lazy would i write a whole 2nd half of a ficlet and just not post it? to be fair it was probably like an extra 100 words but still! my own standards for character consistency, pacing balance and thematic timing are higher than ever before and if i can't match them i simply cut it off where it is. i have thought up the whole scenario behind the iceberg i just think it is very trite and overdone to Write. if you Understand you shouldn't need more than what i post to Get It

(local girl wonders why no one reads her writing)

i also think it's funny that i think exposition is boring because i don't want to read redundant and irrelevant things then i go on to main the writing style that is the most ordinary one of all time (the Modern AU and/or real life canon compliant). at the end of the day i read and write for these things: realism, interpersonal dynamics and witty dialogue. it's just funny that i can enjoy identical relationship archetypes over and over again but i can't enjoy what i perceive to be generic feelings or excessive narration.... truly feels so gen z of me.

what pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?

sieumin? oh it's so weird because again i got into a girl group during Q1 and my interest waned over the course of the year. i swear i still love stayc i just realized it's stayc for music/listens and lsfm for performance/lives but thankfully i don't hate stayc's performances nor le sserafim's music they're perfectly serviceable.

i didn't think i would write V8 (again), or 2eun ever omg but that one was so short that there wasn't a lot of investment going on there except for a reminder that i still want to finish wldn for the thought of eunji/sunhwa's characters #__#

i didn't write a word of f1 rpf btw... which feels insane because i definitely spent as much time or more on f1 this year as kpop #____# but f1 rpf is just not really something i think i can get into unless the right pairing comes around for various reasons

events you participated in this year:

17hols 2022 (masterlist admin)
k-pop ficmix 2022

next year fingers crossed a gg comment fest will be coming to theaters near u (in the late spring)... i also really want to participate in igff i'm so sad that last year i was burnt out when it's really my specialty but i'm genuinely excited to join if it runs again!

i don't think i will join ficmix again lol. this has nothing to do with the mods i just think the writer pool has separated almost entirely from what i am interested in reading. however i would join a friendsmix if that pans out... ♡

your own favorite story of the year:

no.... i wasn't invested in any of my own writing this year enough to call it favorite TT at one point it was false equivalence (my baby original fic) but i still think i can do better...

best story of the year:

actually i have to say all three of my 17hols fills from 2022 round 1 were really good... i have very minimal complaints about them.

most fun story to write:

this review becomes so boring when you don't write anything all year .................

hardest story to write:

i think it was all the stories i didn't write to be honest. when i was younger i actually did think of scenarios in my spare time that involved characters or rpf characters and that was my natural instinct and now it's not like that and what i'm thinking about is harder to translate into fic. should it really be translated into fic?

most memorable comment:

fei's comment on meteorological summer from the tail end of last year was super meaningful to me.... because it really resonated with me and made me believe in what i had written

also this wasn't an ao3 comment or a dw comment but i received the following dm:

omg! i just saw that you're the writer of juliet and i just wanted to say that i rlly love your fic and your s.coups/nayoung always has a special place in my heart 🤍

and that's so touching 4 years later... because all i ever want is to portray a relationship in a way that makes people love them.

favorite fic you read this year:

a few favorites, not in order, and not all encompassing:

또 거짓말을 해 by furniished
just as usual by arcsecond
your dreams in your hands by liptinted
heliotropism by seasignals
the doors of night open by shipwrecks (seasignals)
good time gal by fisticuffs (lowblow)
soft storm by shipwrecks (seasignals)

don't think twice

LINES

a theme/line/play on words you've written into a fic that no one mentioned in the comments:

first

It felt unfair to Yunjin that Chaewon was in the position to tell her these things, even if it was useful advice. When she imagined debuting in a girl group, the ideal was always that it’d be a shared experience. Everyone’s first time. And it seemed easy for someone who was ahead to pretend the gap wasn’t as large as it was.

i think this one is quite obvious but the theme of this fic was first times and experience gaps. chaewon has the age advantage and the idol experience from izone but yunjin (rpf) has more romantic/kissing experience, which i think would be quite fun. i like to even the scales in pairings but even with that, gaps will always create psychological issues in a relationship <3 i don't know lsfm meta enough to ascertain whether this would be in character or totally out there if only bc cw is alr experienced but i think it would be really really fun to conceptualize this r/s where they're always teaching each other things (american vs korean culture) and also yj is "teaching" cw like fwb and both of them are pretending it's just educational. HYJ i'm begging you to not know what dreamwidth is.

favorite opening line(s):

imitation

Jeonghan dated Seungcheol for three months and immediately following that Nayoung went and dated him for four. “I think it was out of spite,” she concluded after explaining to Jiyeon that it wasn’t ever much of a passionate affair. “He was really nice to me, though. Which I think makes him a much better person than I am.”

favorite closing line(s):

imitation

“And you’ve always been good at reading through them, no matter what trick I tried.”
“I learned from the best,” she said simply.
“I think you were good enough at it before we started dating,” Jeonghan replied.

favorite 4 line(s) from anywhere:

false equivalence

“I feel like you don’t like me, Juli,” he said, neither particularly hurt nor calculative. Just like it was a statement of fact.
She frowned, both startled by his candor and affected by the illusion of familiarity. “Only Somin can call me Juli.”

endgame

“It’s his way of expressing himself,” Mingyu said, idly playing with the clicking mechanism of a ballpoint pen. The ceiling light flickered above them, casting shadows and then leaving them in the dark. And like he wanted to sign his own death sentence, he continued, “I forgive him for it.”

nan chun

It was different from what she hadn’t had with Jiho, she decided. You can’t compare a love that had never sprouted to one that was just beginning to bloom.

the realist

“But for you?” Hansol pressed.
“I always thought you and I were similar in that respect,” Minghao said, his voice warm. “You’ve never loved without meaning it.”

top 5 scenes from anywhere you would choose to have illustrated:

> sieun and sumin on the couch in the tv light from more than anyone can

> yubin and suyeon kissing under the entryway light from nan chun

WIP/GOALS

2022:

goals:

write more original fiction in short story form ✓
read more short stories (particularly realistic fiction) or vignettes ✓
contribute meaningfully somehow to ggficdom [eg. run gg dw comment ficathon]
be happy with everything that you post
don't join fests out of obligation ✓ OR leave fests when they become obligation

i did try to read more short stories but even short stories aren't short enough for me LOL. i'm counting my anecdote books though. ggfest next year i hope, being happy with everything i post will literally never happen so that's a wash.

2023:

goals:

run gg dw fest
write something over 2k lol
continue developing a&a universe
stop staying up late to write things no one will read!!!
do something about this

good night!!!
