TAYLOR: first of all the fact that taylor overtook seventeen as top artist after 6 whole years of that (2017, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22) is honestly kind of sad. it's giving end of an era... but obviously it wasn't even close this year. i put this down to a couple of factors:
  • taylor released midnights in Q4 of 2022, i didn't like it, this was reflected in 2022's scrobbles
  • i got extremely lucky and ticketed for the eras tour in nov 2022 because, you know, eras!! it was such xsxj bait even though i didn't like midnights, or even folklore/evermore that much
  • i finished watching gilmore girls at the very end of 2022 and went insane over yt user kindred spirit's gilmore girls edits, in particular all too well and cardigan
  • the eras tour started in march 2023 -> era of extreme cultural relevance for taylor and i went in april
  • safe and sound tv in march
  • CRUEL SUMMER RESURGENCE (so deserved)
  • speak now tv in july
  • 1989 tv in october
  • you're losing me in november
and it's like, i don't even *love* her as a person and she had a lot of eyeroll moments this year including the matty healy phase and private jet usage but somehow she always had a song on my rotation, whether it was a new release / rerelease / something i had just discovered years late. at one point this fall i had 5 different albums represented on my spotify on repeat at the same time (love story from fearless tv, safe and sound from red tv, speak now tv, 1989 tv, midnights). i cannot help the fact that she sings about idealistic love stories (love story/enchanted) and being told to get married (lavender haze) and being afraid you'll never get over someone (labyrinth), drifting apart (you're losing me), realizing you never fix your own character flaws (anti-hero), seeing someone you used to love in your every day life (is it over now) etc. i honestly think it's crazy she has that power to be relatable... and i know not everyone in the world likes her music but i think it's fascinating how much i do even though i think sometimes that she's my polar opposite.

probably too much power... but what am i going to do about it!

SVT: i mentioned this before but my favorite songs are usually love songs, so their triple title track set of super/fml/god of music did not hit at all. the thing is i do really like some of their "non-love songs" eg. hit, fear, hot so i think these were just bad songs. the bsides weren't like, awful, but they weren't very memorable either. somehow my top svt song of the year is dust and it has a grand total of 89 scrobbles... not impressive by either of the below metrics considering it's a short song.

also though me getting into f1 + there not being a US tour this year + not watching gose etc made me less brainwashed and less inclined to listen to their bad music where in the past i would have even if the songs were bad... i've been complaining about svt music in some fashion forever but i think usually i still had some Favorite that i could listen to 300 times to make up for the songs i didn't like and it just did not exist this year

LSFM: interestingly as a lsfm fan, i thought every bside on unforgiven (7 track version) was really excellent but none of them were so good that i was compelled to loop it. this has been a problem with svt in the past too where i got bored with looping the album before i moved on to any one track so they all have relatively mid streams. that is until perfect night was released <3 and it's a short song but it's an earworm and it does have a bridge and 3 choruses so it's forgiven <3 it just never makes me feel like i was waiting for more like some of these other short songs...

TRIPLES: most of these came from generation so i resent that they're at #4 but i did listen to girls capitalism a decent amount. it's still much worse than generation

ANDREW BELLE: token indie artist of my year with songs that came out years ago. his songs are really quite long relatively speaking so i definitely listened to him a lot more than tripleS

NEWJEANS: credit where it is due for having multiple really good songs on get up but i resent that they're so short! my top nwjns song in 2023 was actually ditto despite the fact that it came out at the end of 2022 but i feel like it would have been ETA if it had a final chorus. i am not the target audience!

OMGEOL: honestly summer comes was the only really good song on this year's mini but it was really good so i'm sad that it flopped. i mean... i could blame the short bsides for me not liking them (and i will) but i know that's not why it wasn't popular </3

SAKURAZAKA: my token jpop group... i really fell off on following them in 2022 so they weren't even in my top 50 artists but adding 3ki and having sakurazuki as a single really restored my love for them... just in time for their international push and some of their core members to graduate T__T it's been a rollercoaster year but i'm so glad they're on the way up again <3 it's kinda crazy that i can have this little hope that they're going to come to the us...

9-15: i extended this to 15 this year bc i just thought it was interesting to see where fromis and rv went (down). despite the fact that i think their albums were enjoyable... sort of like unforgiven where the songs are nice as a cohesive album but they don't stand alone that well. (#menow, bring it on, attitude, chill kill, will i ever see you again, knock knock...) although i think that a lot of my #menow scrobbles went to the void. viviz and sabrina carpenter are in the complementary category where i think some of their songs are forgettable but even releasing 3-4 tracks a year that i think are worth saving/stand alone is still an accomplishment in my eyes... few are doing it like you. shocked to see exo there though!! cream soda was below expectations but still better than i thought it was at first. and ive... the off the record hard carry

only half of these songs are actually from this year... either way generation, despite being released in 2022, is MY kpop soty <3 and it "counts" because i only discovered it this year. blessing in disguise is probably my favorite kpop song actually released this year but it feels like it should have an asterisk there too. perfect night is perfect little earworm... off the record was very easy listening. i mean there were a lot of good songs but were there really a lot of good kpop packages (including concept and such) </333 not to my biased eyes.

true blue is my favorite 2023 non-kpop release but there's not a lot of competition... there are quite a few older songs on these lists that i have known about for a long time but still looped a lot this year.

other standout tracks I discovered this year with less listening time
  • Labyrinth - Taylor Swift
  • Is It Over Now? (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault) - Taylor Swift
  • Sister - Andrew Belle
  • 夏の近道 <Natsu no Chikamichi> - 櫻坂46 <Sakurazaka46>
  • Can’t Catch Me Now - Olivia Rodrigo
