the great british baking show
collection 4 (2016)

watched this right after 5, so february apparently. i did not know the winner ahead of time. i am not as attached to this season but u know how it goes.

my faves... benjamina and selasi. selasi was like. he kept scraping through somehow even though i know he had some failures LOL. benjamina wasn't even that bad but i think she had a bad week... anyway they had a really good friendship too so i was sad to see the first of them leave. also though selasi and val... so heartwarming.

tbh just not impressed by the personalities of the finalists not that they're bad they're just not that interesting. iirc andrew was the engineer that was token precisionist i always have a soft spot for those types. also he did a special video with yan from the following season where they made rainbow cake which i thought was really cool.

the great british baking show collection 7 (2019)

just watched it this week, once again, to distract me from things going on in my life. overall, the trend was like, two people flopped, one was eliminated, but then the other just went home the next week LOL. at least it did start like that. some people really saved themselves by the skin of their teeth, and it was very clear at those times how much bakeoff prioritizes flavors and creativity (as it should).

my favorite is michael. i wrote this whole post solely so i could talk about how much i love michael. he was sooo funny and just a delight... such a social butterfly, so encouraging to all the other bakers. u can tell by the where are they now slides where he was in most of the meetup pics LOL. everyone loved him and he loved everyone. i knew he was gonna go but every week i was begging for it to not be him. my second fave was witty priya who also saved herself with flavors but was absolutely horrible at timing. again the curse of episodes 6-8. me and my midtier faves... must i rewatch 2020. (i want to do it!)

but overall i really liked the bakers this season. (i did notice though that this season didn't have a lot of age diversity.) i did know alread who won, but i was really surprised by the narrative arc that led there. when i went in ep 1 i was like ofc that person won the signs are all here, particularly the precision and elegant design, but then they never won sb bc they actually had a lot of shortcomings (spice obsession, style over substance, doesn't know how to make choux???) and if I hadn't known better i would not have expected their win, an underdog indeed. but we love someone who stays calm and collected no matter what like season 8's winner. and season 5's. i think the final three was, to an extent, predictable. by midseason these three were obviously in the top half, but there was a little fluctuation. just rly glad the winner stepped up for the final, but its not like they hadnt gotten really good scores on most of the technicals.

tbh though starting to wonder if the pattern is just that i care less about contestants when it's the second season im binging in a row (8 3 5 4 7) where 3 and 4 I didn't like as much. or is it just the older seasons?! actually it's not like I didn't like people it's just that i was less attached to the overall cast which would check out.
