basically i dmed ren (ao3 user fractalkiss) on may 9th after olymfics postings to tell her i really adored her writing:
and then less than a month later i was assigned to remix ren! now obviously fmix mods cannot read my dms but I did tweet about renfic which is the reason i said that. last year I remixed miuyi (rainiest) and that was my first official ficmix. i remixed andrea (kalachuchi) for a priv remix before that and it was so fun but as u can see my remix history has always been for people whose writing i already admired and had to live up to!!!

my philosophy on ficmix is... actually let me quote miuyi rainiest LOL
remix really has to be one of the most challenging types of fic challenge, but it's definitely about what you want to get out of it. are you trying to experiment with your writing style and branch out? are you trying to give someone what you think they want out of a fic?
everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what a remix is and tbh for all three of my remixes i had a ton of "IS THIS EVEN THE SAME FIC ANYMORE?" crises. and they're really not. kpopficmix defines it as retaining the same core plot. but i don't really find satisfaction in writing events that are identical to the original work -- i'd rather take thematic and symbolic seeds from the original work and write different events to reach similar emotional catharsis. otherwise it'll just be compared side-by-side with the original... my first remix was an approximate prequel, the second was a longer expansion of a very short work with additional characters, and the third is an alternate universe (in this case canonverse) interpretation of the original story's narrative. at the expense of losing most of what would traditionally allow you to recognize it at the same story. so i reread the original for details and provide as many connections as i can.
this is also because i have a lot of limitations as a writer so like, the method of swapping character pov would just end up so inferior to the original, because the author played to their own strengths when writing it in the first place. so i appreciate the freedom to write an emotional arc in my own style. this is what i think it really means to be a 'derivative work'. at the same time, i do personally pay attention to what the author likes and try to incorporate that, which is why studying their writing and other works is so fun and important to the process! of course my goal is also to make the original author happy -- it is classified as a gift too -- but i cannot do that as flexibly as other people!! so i'm also just really lucky that i got people i had things in common with askdjlkdkf ;___;

i was torn between remixing the fractions of probability and sunbursts, in stitches, which is the first fic of ren's that i read! both of them are very good and beautiful and i highly recommend them if you've never read them before. i think that sunbursts was more intimidating because the 'magical realism at the end of the world' was already so delicate, i couldn't imagine how to put a new spin on it that wasn't inferior. chungking au, although steeped in history and set beautifully, had a different sort of emotional progression that was more character driven (= slice of life) than it was by external events (eg. jun in hospital).
originally this was supposed to be au, though. at check-in, this was an au where jun and wonwoo were both in school for arts - acting and scriptwriting or something, and they'd meet doing a project together, and jun would make the same comments about ww's personal side project. but i realized that aus like this are a lot weaker when you don't have arts school experience (aka me) and i was like ok back to the basics (canon compliant) LOL. (the other thing is that in fractions jun and wonwoo already knew each other from the onset, so i wanted to explore a story where they were just getting to know each other. but i've never written wnh au before and apparently i'm not capable of it!) but the point is actually that wonwoo's script was supposed to be, ultimately, the same "story" as the fractions of probability. references to what he was writing were supposed to line up with events from the fic, as if the characters in there were generic. this got cancelled in the end because as i will discuss later, canon!ww wasn't ready to actually make a film. when you read this fic, please assume that he is only ever in the beginning stages of making it.
i never made an actual playlist for this. while i was writing i was usually either listening to faye wong's dreams cover (from the ost of chungking express) or kim jungwoon's so in love (from the ost of love story in harvard). dreams is obviously because the original fic is based on chungking, but so in love kind of has no relevance. i've just been obsessed with this song for years. i never even watched love story in harvard but my parents did and they were the ones that introduced me to kdramas as a kid (of like... 8 years old) so that's when i heard it first. i do want to watch the drama... i love looping this youtube video because 1) it's not on spotify... and 2) because it's a drama mv and includes really good dramatic line delivery.
this is where i got the line "It’s not like one needs to say something out loud for it to be known. Junhui would have preferred a dramatic confession. But maybe not all loves are meant to change the world." the idea is that jun is an actor, jun loves love songs and he idealizes 'romance' and 'romantic gestures'. unfortunately for him i think the most unromantic things in the world (jeon wonwoo repression) are the most romantic.
jun's birthday is june 10th, which is in astronomical spring (march 20 - june 20) but meteorological summer (june 1 - august 31). i thought this was very interesting, and indeed most of us associate 1) the month of june with 'summer', and 2) jun with the summer season. meteorological is a mouthful to type and to say, even in my head. but the original fic has a heavy weather motif, and i set this fic in summer to take advantage of how sensory it is and how much time is spent outside.
i think you can tell how much i've become meanyist within the last year like it's really not even ironic. to me a lot of what ww does is tied into what mg does and although it's not like he needs mg's validation, it's more like ww and mg are really good creative partners. they have parallel tracks and can sort of encourage each other even though they're working on different things. seokmin here is just because i'm obsessed with seokgyu bickering but they're so cute together too!
in the first outline of this fic au!wonwoo was serious about wanting to make a movie but felt like he couldn't make much progress primarily because 1) he has a load of coursework and activities that 'need' to be done and 2) it seems unrealistic to think that a college student could make something outstanding enough to be noticed in the sea of other movies out there. (these are very si-heavy reasons now that i read it LOL. i know ww is si-tert but i definitely overproject as an istj...)
now that it's canon it's even more so, like if you want to do something properly it takes a whole lot of investment, and it's this prodding from jihoon that instantly makes ww doubt himself and his resolve. but at this point the conversation takes a double meaning - ww also won't pursue a relationship because it's too logistically complicated.
victim of not only "test filming"... but also his emotional vortex.
i don't know if i did a good job of conveying this because i too flip-flopped on this multiple times while writing this. as i have previously mentioned, i am the type of writer who comes up with what i feel is good emotional dialogue while i'm just living my life and then AFTER that, i build the plot around those notes, to 'make sense' (ymmv on that). so my 1st google doc comment on this was
and two days later my second one was
... haha... i think this does align well with the idea that he can't really commit to anything without being sure of it.
i love boojun dynamics... also i wrote that before finding this but irl in 2017:
actually what i originally wrote for sk was literally 'this isn't an office' but i changed it because it was overlapping with the following sentence. i'm glad to see that i'm good at absorbing the sebteens' dialogue styles!!
aside from the fact that real life jun has talked about wanting to open a dessert cafe and a malaxiangguo restaurant... reference to chungking express ofc.
also, one of my favorite lines of fractions:
what can i say... it's actually really effective to have such a term to describe forcing yourself to write and depriving yourself of external stimuli. thank you to my tl
this is the wz "turn off the autotune im trying to work" / hoshy "can you make me a beat?" / wz: "what bpm?" of this wonhui
i really wanted to put a railroad tracks scene because walking along them myself was a really sensory experience. something else you may notice about the fic's structure, weatherwise, is the sun being out at the beginning and middle but the rain, cool weather coming at the end.
and this is what i mean about the film half being a pretense so ww can figure out jun. he does want to do it but makes no practical progress towards that goal. jun can tell and he wants to break the loop (that they 'talk about' in the amusement park scene). someone was going to crack, after all.
"lie" has a ton of meanings so it does not literally mean lie (noun) in all its definitions. however, to evoke one alternate: it also "means" stagnation, don't you think?
i think often about ww's rumored long term gf, and it seems a little disingenuous of me to pretend that he has no experience etc for the sake of the story. but you know... interpret it how you will. tied with the earlier section (ww's script lines about breaking up with an ex and jun saying 'it doesn't feel like you love her' and ww denying that the main character is him even though that's not what jun literally said, you know. overcompensating.
the fanart that inspired this directly... *___*
this is the section that ties most strongly to the original fic and qualifies it to be a remix LOL... here's the most relevant section (though this theme is present throughout the entire og)
this is one of my fave sections of the fic (i also love the railyard and 3x3 a lot). i'm glad that everyone appreciated my plds shade.
here is an excerpt from a svt r/s dw post i don't want to finish writing:
and as for the happy ending, this is a direct reference to the original:
the point of this & the point of the fic basically is that jn induces ww to make the attempt because first of all, no one can say for SURE whether a decision to get into a r/s is bad before it even starts. that's only something you can know in hindsight. but to be fair its quite complicated >___> and second of all it might be worth it even if it doesn't work out.
more keeping up the pretense because it's easier than talking about your feelings in a straightforward manner :)
i don't have any insight this is just one of my fav lines hehe
this is kind of a reference to how fractions is an alternate universe version of this story. it's like to say, even if this doesn't really happen exactly as it's written, something of the sort will happen to someone else so it holds meaning to tell the story anyway.
this is... the laptop appears multiple times in this fic but it dying here is kind of symbolic of ww letting go of his excessive worries
more pretense. if they weren't celebrities they wouldn't be able to get a ride whenever they want because money is actually important and THEN they could have a goodnight n go moment. i would have added greater reference to those lyrics if this hadn't been a fic set fully in the summertime T__T on the other hand if they weren't celebrities it would be a lot easier to make decisions about personal relationships without so much weight riding on them (so many other people's lives impacted if you make a mistake, too.)
omg i'm so sorry that this was that long...

my philosophy on ficmix is... actually let me quote miuyi rainiest LOL
I’ve done ficmix many times and I usually try not to think of it like I’m writing a gift for someone too much because it gets really difficult to try to cater to someone’s preferences while working with so much source material [...]

In the heart of the summer, Mingyu gets into vlogging, and Wonwoo tries to write a short film.

“There’s your first victim,” he tells Wonwoo.
victim of not only "test filming"... but also his emotional vortex.
Wonwoo would not dare to attribute this particular happiness to the person who gave him the ticket. “It’s research.”
i don't know if i did a good job of conveying this because i too flip-flopped on this multiple times while writing this. as i have previously mentioned, i am the type of writer who comes up with what i feel is good emotional dialogue while i'm just living my life and then AFTER that, i build the plot around those notes, to 'make sense' (ymmv on that). so my 1st google doc comment on this was
i need a new justification for this scene bc this is pretty weak, jww already knows the range of jn emotions and this won't be enlightening in the least
and two days later my second one was
i think - in classic "this sounds bad so i'll do a reversal and pretend the silliness is a Statement" fashion i will make the point that jww never really intended to "cast" jn as anything but was always using it as an excuse to spend time together without saying it
... haha... i think this does align well with the idea that he can't really commit to anything without being sure of it.
“Maybe he wanted to live a little,” Seungkwan says with a hand to his heart.
“Well,” he says, “can you have Jun find me when he’s back?”
“I’m not his secretary,” Seungkwan snaps, and shuts the door in his face.
“Well,” he says, “can you have Jun find me when he’s back?”

also, one of my favorite lines of fractions:
“My mom was an artist. She took on the business of running a food stall when she was young but I always thought of her as an artist growing up,” Junhui had told Wonwoo once. “She liked it better that way, I guess. That way she gets to keep what she loves, instead of losing it to something else.”
writing jail
what can i say... it's actually really effective to have such a term to describe forcing yourself to write and depriving yourself of external stimuli. thank you to my tl
Wonwoo opens the script document again.
“What kind of restaurant?”
“What kind of restaurant?”
this is the wz "turn off the autotune im trying to work" / hoshy "can you make me a beat?" / wz: "what bpm?" of this wonhui
Junhui leads the way under the blazing sun
i really wanted to put a railroad tracks scene because walking along them myself was a really sensory experience. something else you may notice about the fic's structure, weatherwise, is the sun being out at the beginning and middle but the rain, cool weather coming at the end.
He brought a hand camera but doesn’t ever actually move to film anything.
and this is what i mean about the film half being a pretense so ww can figure out jun. he does want to do it but makes no practical progress towards that goal. jun can tell and he wants to break the loop (that they 'talk about' in the amusement park scene). someone was going to crack, after all.
“I don’t know what you mean,” Wonwoo manages to say, a lie in all senses of the word.
"lie" has a ton of meanings so it does not literally mean lie (noun) in all its definitions. however, to evoke one alternate: it also "means" stagnation, don't you think?
“Yeah,” Wonwoo says, sitting at the dining table, “I did like someone, even before her. So it’s not like I never have. But it wouldn’t have made any sense.”
i think often about ww's rumored long term gf, and it seems a little disingenuous of me to pretend that he has no experience etc for the sake of the story. but you know... interpret it how you will. tied with the earlier section (ww's script lines about breaking up with an ex and jun saying 'it doesn't feel like you love her' and ww denying that the main character is him even though that's not what jun literally said, you know. overcompensating.
Wonwoo’s gaze softens on instinct, Junhui’s mouth so close to his, like he’d never felt that kind of warmth so near.

“I think if we hadn’t met you’d never have noticed me”
this is the section that ties most strongly to the original fic and qualifies it to be a remix LOL... here's the most relevant section (though this theme is present throughout the entire og)
In a perfect world, people who are supposed to fall in love will always keep meeting by chance. Junhui is a romantic [...]
“But you can keep meeting and running into someone by chance and never feel the same way they do" [...]
“That’s true. But I don’t think it’s the frequency that counts.” [...] “It’s more like—how you keep running into each other that counts, I guess. From there, you just start to notice things."
There’s a clear difference between probability and chance. Like how you can keep drifting towards the likelihood of something happening before it does, painted fresh with colours so vibrant it’s hard to not wonder. And then chance just means that the probability is so low that you’d have to look back to see where you bulldozed through everything blindly if you missed it.

“We’re not as different as you make it sound,” Wonwoo says lightly, foot tamped down on the brake pedal at a red light that had been frozen for a long time and would continue to wait for opposing cars that would never come.
“We’re not similar enough,” Junhui answers, and in what respect he meant it was left up to Wonwoo to determine.
“Well,” he says after a moment, “I think you’ve suggested a great short film ending.” The light turns green and he accelerates the car.
“Don’t you think the viewer wants a happy ending?”
“I think they deserve a realistic one,” Wonwoo says. “And I want one.”

“Don’t you think the viewer wants a happy ending?”
“I think they deserve a realistic one,” Wonwoo says. “And I want one.”
here is an excerpt from a svt r/s dw post i don't want to finish writing:
wonwoo is, like i said, observant enough and sympathetic enough to stand by him when he's alone. it's about the silent companionship. [...] it sounds contradictory, but despite the fact that i said wonwoo can understand jun well, there's also so much they don't have in common (jun is way too energetic and weird, wonwoo is interested in history and symbolism) so they are not good at communicating with each other and i love that for them.
and as for the happy ending, this is a direct reference to the original:
“Don’t you want to know whether or not they get together?” Junhui asks [...]
“Whether or not they do, is it a happy ending?” Wonwoo asks.
“Depends on how you look at it,” Junhui says, grinning.
“Goodnight, Wen Junhui,” Wonwoo deadpans, sweeps his hand towards the door in feigned annoyance.
“Whether or not they do, is it a happy ending?” Wonwoo asks.
“Depends on how you look at it,” Junhui says, grinning.
“Goodnight, Wen Junhui,” Wonwoo deadpans, sweeps his hand towards the door in feigned annoyance.
“How should I weigh my own feelings against other people’s?” he asks, glancing at Junhui, then back at the empty road. “How do I know when I’m giving too much up, or when I’ve gotten greedy?”
“I don’t know, and I can’t tell you,” Junhui says, eyes rapt. “Isn’t that something you have to figure out through trial and error?”
“I don’t know, and I can’t tell you,” Junhui says, eyes rapt. “Isn’t that something you have to figure out through trial and error?”
the point of this & the point of the fic basically is that jn induces ww to make the attempt because first of all, no one can say for SURE whether a decision to get into a r/s is bad before it even starts. that's only something you can know in hindsight. but to be fair its quite complicated >___> and second of all it might be worth it even if it doesn't work out.
“Because,” he answers, pushing his way in. Junhui offers no resistance. “Mingyu’s distracting and it’s rather difficult to work in your sleeping space. I don’t have structure, I don’t have boundaries. It’s not a productive working environment.”
more keeping up the pretense because it's easier than talking about your feelings in a straightforward manner :)
“Why do you think I would do better?” Junhui asks. “If I made the effort to be more popular. Or more beloved.”
Wonwoo considers and answers with “charisma”.
“Are you sure you don’t just like me?”
Wonwoo just laughs and goes back to typing away in his word processor like it was a joke at surface level and possessed no further depth.

Wonwoo just laughs and goes back to typing away in his word processor like it was a joke at surface level and possessed no further depth.
i don't have any insight this is just one of my fav lines hehe
“You know, if it wasn’t us,” Junhui says decisively, “if we hadn’t met, there would be other people who would have the same story. There’s something to be said about how we can relate to movies and songs, it means we’ve overlapped with someone else’s experience.”
this is kind of a reference to how fractions is an alternate universe version of this story. it's like to say, even if this doesn't really happen exactly as it's written, something of the sort will happen to someone else so it holds meaning to tell the story anyway.
Wonwoo’s laptop finally runs out of battery, the charger cable strewn carelessly across the carpet.
this is... the laptop appears multiple times in this fic but it dying here is kind of symbolic of ww letting go of his excessive worries
Junhui again with excuses that don’t mean anything in the face of reality. Wonwoo who will play along because he, too, wants the semblance of normality.
more pretense. if they weren't celebrities they wouldn't be able to get a ride whenever they want because money is actually important and THEN they could have a goodnight n go moment. i would have added greater reference to those lyrics if this hadn't been a fic set fully in the summertime T__T on the other hand if they weren't celebrities it would be a lot easier to make decisions about personal relationships without so much weight riding on them (so many other people's lives impacted if you make a mistake, too.)

also: more pretense. if they weren't celebrities they wouldn't be able to get a ride whenever they want because money is actually important >> the ending of the fic left me with that dual sense of happy ending?! and also the realism of the extent they can actually be transparent, i think you are just so good at that!! ♡
