looking back, did you expect to write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?
what i expected which is because i got in a rut with ficfests. yes in this post i unapologetically intend to blame all my writing problems on ficfests. i had my staples (ggjb and its mixtape round, dcf out of obligation, ficmix and i added svtjb and the dkday fic) which basically set my schedule for the year and left me super drained by the end of the summer fest season... i fully believe that fests allow me to write some of my best work where i wouldn't have otherwise but i don't know how to drop out when it's not helping, which is really bad. i guess i did expect to be able to post something else short after ficmix but i'm so busy these days, i think. honestly, writing ficmix was already a huge struggle time and inspiration-wise and i only did it because i was committed to writing something good for my remixee.
what pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
not january, but after writing year in review 2020! i got into itzy on like... christmas day during vacation thanks to don't put ryujin and chaeryeong in the same room. this honestly feels like it was longer than a year ago because i went through Q1 2021 as an itzy fan and then after mitm came out i was like Um I hate their music so much. not shy was truly their best ep lol... anyway ryuryeong is good but ironically they're too emotionally stable to write more of.
events you participated in this year:
i do think that the work fest mods go through is undervalued because there's a lot to manage, and this is especially so for exchange-style ones like ficmix. but i want to give a shoutout to my mod friends and mutuals who have worked hard this year regardless of what it was ♡ you made a lot of people happy!!
your own favorite story of the year:
some of us have a favorite child and it shows. OBSESSION is mine. there's so much about it that i love - i never knew the svtjb artist well enough to participate so round 4 was my first chance. i didn't know what i was going to write at first, but once i got the idea it was so much FUN to write. the opportunity to write wonhan, two of the most interesting personalities in seventeen to me + explore a dynamic i've never written before (two people 'dating' who are going to break up, senior/junior, etc) and have so many people take interest in it; it really felt like a story that i was satisfied with in all ways. then there continued to be wonhan moments this year that revived the brainworms. i finished this like a month before it was posted or something like that, and it wasn't posted immediately which, while frustrating in a delayed gratification sort of way, actually pushed me to edit it even more and fix everything that was bothering me even slightly. so there's very little cringe i feel rereading this!
meteorological summer is a close second fave. i think it came out really well and it definitely has more beautiful, romantic lines than obsession, which was more satisfying in a depressing way. i would say if obsession has 2% worth of cringe then meteorological summer has like 7%. an example of cringe is like worldbuilding that tries too hard if that makes sense... i really try to remove all but the details because that feels more real to me than being like 'oh they're in the practice room they just ran through a choreo for the concert' which just sounds like a fan who's just learned about kpop. i don't know how to explain it, but there are little things about it that bother me now, like shoehorning in a seungkwan award.
best story of the year:
OBSESSION for reasons detailed above. it's not every year that my favorite story feels like the best which is either a testament to the perfect storm of obsession or a testament to how much i disliked the rest of my work this year lol, and the circumstances in which i created them.
actually i lowkey forgot about my dwfic, but for short work i also think at least i'll wait for you, eviscerated, and SOMEBODY LOVES YOU THIS MUCH are really good and cringe-free. i just think about them so much less because i wrote each of them in one sitting, so they also feel inherently less impressive.
most fun story to write:
for ao3 fics obsession, and maybe false advertising, which was the arguing/resentment conflict that is the backbone of ao3 user tonyang kurusui fic. but the thing about false advertising is i was also just consumed with the need to 'provide' itzy/ryuryeong fic and i think that overshadowed the fun a little.
for dw fic, everything 17hols was SO MUCH FUN and there's a reason we all look back on last winter so fondly, and are counting down the days until dec 28 2021. but i also have to say theory of omission because i sort of wrote it on a whim after just the whole year wondering when i'd have the ideas to write something original, instead of being sad because the dynamic i wanted to write about didn't exist amongst the pairings and fandoms i was into. this is especially so for girl groups because they're marketed so differently. i really enjoyed it because, with rps i'm always trying to work off of/extrapolate something that i can see a basis for, whereas with original you can do whatever you want, so there's more freedom, but i still have careful choices to make regarding what direction to go in. (you can technically do whatever you want in rpf too, but i don't WANT to do that.) i'm excited to write more original work next year but i'm not pushing myself to do so - i want each successive work to be just as good as the last, so i'd rather wait until i have the ideas. i just know the potential is out there.
hardest story to write:
lmao where do i begin... every other one that i didn't talk about. :( close your eyes was difficult because i have so little experience writing seoksoon individually and seoksoon also isn't particularly the strongest pairing these days, i really did love them though. nuance was hard because oh idk... i was supposed to write ryuryeong for that but it wasn't coming out right so i switched to something i thought would be fun but in the end i didn't have enough basis to go anywhere with it. your voice on the phone wasn't terrible but that was supposed to be a 10k fic idea and again couldn't go anywhere with it. writing omgeol is honestly really hard. last year's effort was better than this one. house of dreams was surprisingly difficult, considering that it was based on my favorite books. i don't remember but something like 10 percent of it is based directly on book prose!! anyway i cannot write plot and its even harder to base on something that already exists so i'm never doing that again. also how do you write 8jun. help. overt romance is so difficult. but i do have to say that 8jun romance perspectives are interesting to consider because they really both are romantics. and even meteorological summer was difficult like i said because the original fic is so good how was i supposed to live up to it... i had no time after starting a new job and traveling every other weekend... the comment on status quo as a whole was so thoughtful regarding how works age as the dynamics they're based on change, and ren's comment is so good re: jww characterization. i really love my comments sections though and i try to express my appreciation for every comment T___T
favorite fic you read this year:
this is too difficult because in all honesty, what i probably would have said as number one is not a fic that i feel the same about now as i did when it was first published. the author would agree with me so i'm omitting it.
here are a few favorites, not in order, and not all encompassing:

usually if no one mentions it in the comments it'll be in a dvd commentary but there's none of that for dwfic LOL.
anyway-- jihoon doesn't like raw egg yolks but he made sunny side eggs?? either out of habit from soonyoung or because he knew there was a chance soonyoung would come over. or that he was waiting and hoping for him to.

hi i'm, *checks calendar* 4 years late to comment, but this fic occasionally resurfaces in my mind whenever i think about these two which is interesting, considering that they are nothing like this lol
In a sense, I think this fic is kinda like a time capsule; there’s sentiments relatable only if you’ve observed them very early on because i feel like back then gyuhao shippers were often susceptible to this anxiety of ‘what if they’re not as close as they say they are?’

Jihoon is making sunny-side up eggs for breakfast when Kwon Soonyoung barges in the doorway like he owns the place. Jihoon never changes the code, which is probably a security risk. Soonyoung hasn’t been over for two weeks.
“Can I have some?” Soonyoung asks in lieu of a greeting, a great big smile on his face. “I’m starving.”
“The sesame seeds are on the counter,” Jihoon replies, flipping one of the eggs over because in truth, he doesn’t like his yolks raw.

OBSESSION
Humans have more vulnerable parts than you might think. Once Junhui kicked Wonwoo in the shin and it hurt so bad that he was gasping for air long after Junhui left.
favorite closing line(s):
the city of my heart
Sometimes it feels like Jeonghan has so much less to lose, side by side with a man whose heart was so transparently poured into one place, left there to solidify, rooted, immovable. Seungcheol trusts Jeonghan’s judgment much more than his own, though — so if Jeonghan won’t verbalize it he will follow suit.
The unspoken truth that yes, you do mean so much to me that I’d rather keep it inside than lose a single part of this love.

And before long Junhui was talking about him all the time, Soonyoung this, Soonyoung that, “Soonyoung always sends fun emoticons to my animal pics, Soonyoung’s so cute, Soonyoung doesn’t ignore my texts like you do sometimes,” and Minghao was equally happy for him and equally resentful about it. Soonyoung’s all-consuming love can burn out, he’d seen it before. Everyone else is left in the aftermath. In the end he was right that it wasn’t sustainable.
Minghao wishes he didn’t believe in manifestation.
Minghao wishes he didn’t believe in manifestation.
SOMEBODY LOVES YOU THIS MUCH
Jeonghan blinked slowly, and she waited some more to hear his answer.
“You shouldn’t have,” he said, and her heart flatlined. “Come in, it’s cold outside,” he said, and it restarted.
“You shouldn’t have,” he said, and her heart flatlined. “Come in, it’s cold outside,” he said, and it restarted.
WHEN I SEE YOU NOW
“Wonwoo,” Mingyu whispered, nudging his leg through the hospital linens.
He sighed. “Junhui—”
“I hope you get better soon,” Junhui said. He didn’t just mean physically.
He sighed. “Junhui—”
“I hope you get better soon,” Junhui said. He didn’t just mean physically.
false advertising
Chaeryeong sighs, skyscrapers and city lights flashing by before her eyes. “If the world could see the real Ryujin and Chaeryeong, well, they wouldn’t be so loved, don’t you think?”
Truthfully, no, she doesn’t. “I think you’d be loved even more,” Ryujin says.
Truthfully, no, she doesn’t. “I think you’d be loved even more,” Ryujin says.
nuance
“You can stay,” Sojung tells her, words effortlessly dripping with allure. Nayoung can’t tell if it was intentional or not, if she’s being used, or if she has been ever since that pivotal day in backwater Seoul. She should have known all along that actions have consequences.
your voice on the phone
Yoobin really looked at her, for the first time since she'd entered the room. All this time she'd thought she was in love with a memory, but here Jiho was in front of her, alive and real. Jiho seemed brighter and more vibrant than ever.
meterological summer
It’s not like one needs to say something out loud for it to be known. Junhui would have preferred a dramatic confession. But maybe not all loves are meant to change the world.

Date: Tue, Dec. 21st, 2021 11:12 am (UTC)but ok back to the start of the post. i love to see this fandom distribution + your increase in dw word count! writing 20 fics in a year (even with dw commentfic) is insane to meee you are truly a genius *___*
also even though we both know i don’t go here (caratland) i still think about obsession and its opening lines all the time. that and false advertising... and YOUR VOICE ON THE PHONE!!! sorry for rambly unfocused comment but Also your original piece too—there’s something about how you write unfurling dialogue that gets me every time. you have such an incredible economic writing style that still conveys so much emotion and tension and i'm so happy to see you focus more on original work where hopefully you experience less of the "pressure" of fandom! ;; also hope you can successfully avoid overburdening yourself with fests + just write more personally-oriented pieces in 2022 in general, whether that be in the form of og fiction or experimental fanfiction. anyway “yes in this post i unapologetically intend to blame all my writing problems on ficfests.” UR SO RIGHT FOR THIS!!! honestly i feel bad that you had to suffer through dcf this year you really worked hard T___T 💔
Very Unrelated "then after mitm came out i was like Um I hate their music so much. not shy was truly their best ep lol..." SCREAM same hat. but itzy ficdom is just unsustainable to me because my favs don’t seem to be majorly shipped T___T (admittedly i haven't tried very hard to get into it. That's on me.) yuna is perfect for tinhetting though so i’d like to see that!!! AND LOL AT RYURYEONG BEING TOO EMOTIONALLY STABLE FOR YOU.
anyway idk if this comment makes any sense BUT!!! you are so iconic risa thank you for this wonderful review post i enjoyed it immensely! also wow @ nyjh atw au.

thank you for the wishes and i hope that's the case for you too! we should be on this website to write what makes us happy
