THE BACKSTORY
first of all, a huge congratulations to me for exceeding my writing goal for this year already (a paltry two thousand words). second, i thought i was ready to write for fests again but i don't think that i am... i'm not really happy with this one because it's all over the place and i don't think it was very effective as a whole. but nevertheless... i must support my friends' good fic fest ideas!!!
the problem is this fic started as a workplace romance (absolutely as boring as it sounded, as it was probably influenced by the very slow-paced first episode of the interest of love) and then i decided to go the romcom misunderstanding route but then looped the workplace back into it, which given my work ethic when it comes to writing, i should have known better than to do!! then again the alternative to this was yjh f1 driver / nayoung f1 wag (category including the wives and girlfriends of f1 drivers) au which i felt insane about doing because it was like very what-are-we, nayoung doesn't want to be seen with him in public because of the media and the labeling. and that's not even really new for inyyjh fic... but the reason i didn't do it was ultimately because i did NOT want to world build for this LOL. this is partly bc the fic i used to procrastinate on this one was indeed the female idol sort-of-f1-au which... it's not out of the question that i am going to finish that but i do fear it's going to be extremely boring. i spent more than half the time i worked on it doing RESEARCH on superformula and car manufacturers so like...
i'm pretty sure this fic was written to a bunch of songs that went viral on tiktok at some point until i lost focus and had to switch to piano/instrumental pieces, which is a very effective method when you know what you have to write but can't make yourself do it.

so tl;dr in case you did not want to read all that but i think the first comment says it the best. this is heavily inspired by my obsession with the dean/rory/jess love triangle from gilmore girls. the point is like, nayoung dates coups out of naivety (the idea that all you need to have a happy relationship is someone who likes you) and later realizes that she's not a good enough person for him, he doesn't truly make her happy, etc. and instead of maturely ending things and moving on, she delays the inevitable and pretends they can repair the relationship in order to preserve the status quo, leaving it in limbo. ... even knowing she's starting to like jeonghan, who is better at detecting her real emotions, she won't admit that so that she doesn't have to do anything about it. that "toxic repression" affects other people besides herself though. i love to write a heroine who doesn't know what she wants.
the other key phrase in this fic is the titular one: “We lack the innocence of those in their youth,” Jeonghan said. “And the freedom to use it as an excuse.” this idea is the one that jeonghan, whose acute perception ironically led him to the wrong conclusion because of nayoung(/seungcheol)'s deception, can't really flirt with nayoung "knowing" that it's the immoral thing to do... but "the innocence..." also refers to the younger nayoung i discussed above who hadn't had enough life experience at the time she chose to start going out with csc to know how things were going to turn out.
most of these other messy comments are me trying to rationalize the timeline and the character decisions here, because as i said on twitter this was written very very out of order. even though that's an exposure of my writing incompetence i hope you find it interesting to read LOL. i really do wish i could have written it better, but that's life!!
