1. IN THIS UNIVERSE:
- Formula Asia is an all-women racing series that races in East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia
- Modeled after Formula 1 (points system, open formula instead of spec series so there’s some car development, regional but international)
- Similar prestige level as Super Formula, but marketed like F1, and globalizing like kpop

*Nagyung had a year off
*2023 grid - Hanni replaces Nagyung under ADORIS Racing, who bought out SM Universe’s spot in 2022
*2023 grid - Kazuha enters Source Racing and moves to Sony after 2 years
*2025 grid - Eunchae partners Yunjin @ Source Racing for 1 year before Yunjin moves to SM Hyundai
- Daniel Ricciardo: “main character of Drive to Survive”, generally well liked by others in the sport for jokester persona, i dropped this inspiration very quickly in favor of these others but it still exists in the dts section
- Yuki Tsunoda: rookie who enters Formula 1 in a midfield team’s car which is competitive enough for finishes in the points, improves as a driver in second/third season but doesn’t get significantly better results because the car goes to shit
Lando Norris:purinz was supposed to be inspired by the carlando/yukierre attachments where the new driver got really close to the older/more experienced driver who was still in his youth so to speak... and (lando voice) “just kinda grew up a little bit more together” but then i was like why replicate an interesting relationship (carlos/lando) when i could just replicate a boring one (lando/oscar)!!!! i still yukierre-ified them though... the way yuki looked like a kicked puppy when pierre left alphatauri and then had to continue to deal w/ a shitty car while pierre got to move to a (slightly) more competitive car- Oscar Piastri: spent some time out of the sport for reasons beyond his control (ie. got “behind” even though he’s very talented because he was part of a junior academy for an incompetent french team), is polite with his teammate but doesn’t immediately get on as well as his teammate did with his former teammates aka they have no chemistry comparatively (EDIT: this is subjective but i think the lando/oscar dynamic is getting better through the season). if i do say so myself there is a serious parallel btwn yunjin and oscar... girl got evil edited out of pd48 for the silliest reason and came back in to kpop swinging with one of the best stage presences in her group...
- Charles Leclerc: messy rebound after finally getting what you’d always, foolishly wanted... iykyk
4. DRIVERS’ CHAMPIONS OF ASIA
Year | Driver | Team | Runner-up |
2011 | Kim Taeyeon | SM Hyundai | Jessica Jung, SM Hyundai |
2012 | Kim Taeyeon | SM Hyundai | Jessica Jung, SM Hyundai |
2013 | Kim Taeyeon | SM Hyundai | Kim Hyolyn, Starship Motors |
2014 | Jung Eunji | Cube Motorsport | Ahn Hani, Yedang FA Team |
2015 | Jung Eunji | Cube Motorsport | Park Jihyo, JY Park Racing |
2016 | Park Jihyo | JY Park Racing | Kim Sejeong, Jellyfish Racing |
2017 | Bae Joohyun | SM Hyundai | Jennie Kim, YG Motorsport |
2018 | Miyawaki Sakura | Vernalossom | Hirate Yurina, Sony Motorsport |
2019 | Kang Seulgi | SM Hyundai | Bae Joohyun, SM Hyundai |
2020 | Miyawaki Sakura | Vernalossom | Song Yuqi, Cube Motorsport |
2021 | Kang Seulgi | SM Hyundai | Shin Ryujin, JY Park Racing |
2022 | Shin Ryujin | JY Park Racing | Kim Chaewon, Vernalossom |
2023 | Kim Chaewon | Vernalossom | Yoo Jimin, SM Hyundai |
2024 | Yoo Jimin | SM Hyundai | Ning Yizhuo, SM Hyundai |
2025 | Yoo Jimin | SM Hyundai | Hanni Pham, ADORIS Racing |
2026 | Huh Yunjin | SM Hyundai | Hanni Pham, ADORIS Racing |
ROUGH ANALOGIES TO F1: SM Hyundai is Mercedes (string of hits) or RB (sister team in SM Universe = AlphaTauri), Vernalossom is kinda Red Bull (relatively new emerging dominance), and Cube is Ferrari lmao (incompetent legacy team won’t win another championship for 15 years). JY Park Racing doesn’t really have a good analog (McLaren?) but they’re pretty good contenders every few years, just hit gold when they have a star driver. YG/Black Label are the same thing... YG also has Ferrari-isms.
2021 standings:
- Seulgi 1
- Ryujin 2
- Joohyun 3
- Sakura 4
- (Minnie, Yuqi, Jimin, Somi)
- Chaewon ~9
- (Jihyo, Yena)
- Yunjin ~12
2022 standings:
- Ryujin 1
- Chaewon 2
- Sakura 3
- Jimin 4
- Lily 5
- Ningning 6
5. PLAYLIST
what i listened to: some songs from a playlist of HYJ recommendations + whatever was fitting the vibes at the time. but really i did it all for love i did it all on no drugs = me writing this fic
- nonsense - sabrina carpenter
- kill bill - sza
- labyrinth - taylor swift
- stargazing - the neighbourhood
- bags - clairo
what i think is actually most representative of the fic:
2021 - bags
2022 - labyrinth
the title ‘every second counts’ is the first line of bags, and i think it’s a great double meaning because in the context of the song it’s about not wanting to waste your time with the person you like, and in a racing context, every second/tenth of a second/hundredth/thousandth literally matters because those fine margins are what makes a driver good.
6. NOTES/COMMENTARY
what do i have to say... i love formula 1 and realized this was the only way i could write 1) an “f1 au” of anything 2) any au that isn’t a basic modern setting. unfortunately it ended up being a ton of work to world build which is why i will never do it again. i think it’s actually insane that i wrote this many words because i have literally never written something above 8k. i started it around pre-season testing, which was in february of this year...? it took me 5 months to finish T__T i did give up on it for a bit but i would say i have been writing or editing a few days a week for the last 2 months T__T
fun fact: hinatazaka46 tomita suzuka is named after the suzuka circuit! (she has a tiny cameo in this fic...) i believe she does real-life commentary or promotional work for super formula.
*(a line-by-line commentary may follow if i feel like it)
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT F1
- Netflix Drive to Survive (Season 1 standalone is probably the most useful, or watch them all, or just skip to the latest season if you want to see who inspired the fic)
- my personal fav F1 podcast Shift+F1 does yearly primers (2023’s is here)
- the official F1 Youtube channel + Twitter are great at clipping highlights and news
- Reddit is where I read news/discussion/reactions!
